[ It doesn't really matter where Giyuu is. Shinobu is searching for him and won't stop until she finds him. There were some tells in their conversation with Mitsuri, and it'd be best for them to address it than let it hang in the air.
It's especially important after his hunch and doubly so after that disembodied voice informs the entire island. ]
Tomioka-san. Tomioka-san!
[ She has a hand raised in greeting. Notice her, binch senpai. ]
[ she won't have to look for him too hard since he'll be looking for more food to bring back for his camp. they told him to take care jungle camp (sort of) so that's what he's going to go about doing.
...besides, they're a bunch of kids with limited survival skills and he can't just let them be.
that also said, he can't be surprised that she came looking for him after their conversation coupled with the ""announcement"". so, unlike for most people, he won't run for her and just faces her with a papaya in his hand. ]
[ yeah, he definitely heard it but just ask him what he's supposed to do about it immediately? there isn't a person that he can chase down and beat up to make it go away and they still need to eat... he's just being practical! ]
I know.
[ because shinobu deserves to have some answers before giyuu goes through long periods of time not speaking to her properly again. but, hey, at least he's sort of looking at her compared to the last time where he avoided looking at her for the entirety of it.
...mostly. ]
It means now we'll see if they will do what you hope they will.
[ he goes to look at the papaya in his hands. this also means they need to give them an alternative reason to consider if others haven't already. ]
[ She thinks it's fine, all well and good, even great that he's collecting food. He's being useful and helpful in that way, at least. It's more verve than what she usually sees from him.
Even if he glances away from her again, she keeps her eyes on him. ]
If we can't find an alternative solution in time... [ Because well, she didn't expect their time limit to be as short as two weeks. ] You know what awaits me. Or what doesn't.
[ There's a levity to her words, the way her voice usually makes it seems like she's talking about how the moon is beautiful, but she's dead serious. ]
and he can sense her eyes on him, but not like it changes much of anything, if anything the papaya looks all that much more interesting to him. rather, it's going to buy him some time to think about how he should answer.
it's very obvious what's she's referring to. he doesn't even have to think too hard about it. it's ironic given the loss he has dealt with and people he would have wanted to speak to. this was not a situation he thought he'd find himself in. ]
[ Of course he chooses not to address it any more. That's fine. He can stay clueless until he chooses to use his words more, until he learns how to better use his words. Shinobu doesn't mean to keep the circumstances secret now that it's after the fact, but....
Giyuu is Giyuu, and for some reason, he has a way of bringing out her immaturity. ]
Did you win your fight with the Upper Moon?
[ She doesn't recall hearing a crow caw about it. ]
I don't know. [ he says, almost sounding ashamed of it mainly because he is ashamed. ] I was knocked back.
[ or more like kicked away through several walls and might have passed out for a bit, so coming to in a large body of water was jarring at the absolute least... but that's hardly anything compared to leaving tanjiro to deal with the upper moon on his own. boy that isn't sitting well with him. yeah, tanjiro has grown a lot but to take on an upper moon on his own—
that's a weight on his mind that he's just going to have to deal with separately than what they should be addressing now. he'll lower the papaya and look over to shinobu and, well, there isn't any way to better say this even if he knew how. ]
By all rights, an Upper Moon should take an average of three Pillars to defeat. They both know this. Of course she understands wanting to defeat one all on your own. Of course she wanted to stand triumphant, but she also knows reality, and that's why she turned her entire body into poison for over a year.
She understands wanting to be better. She understands wanting to be good enough. She understands that they are still only human.
She smiles, and it lacks any of the sharpness she usually aims at him. ]
I did. You heard correctly. I hope you win when you return.
[ Logically, she should say if, but she truly wishes for it to be when. She's going to make it so. ]
[ yeah, this is going as well as anyone could have predicted.
and, likely to a frustrating degree, giyuu is going to take his time to reply to her because, of course he plans on going back to win. an upper moon is not their target—muzan is their target. he has always been their target. he will go back and make sure that tanjiro doesn't die and that they defeat muzan.
right now, though, is giyuu going to make the biggest attempt to communicate, but sometimes when you allot your points all wrong through your life, this is just the best that you can manage.
so while it makes sense for shinobu to want him to make it out alive... ]
You shouldn't die here as well.
[ please take mercy on his soul, shinobu, this is the best that giyuu will ever be able to do in something like this. ]
[ She's more tolerant of his mannerisms and habits now than she usually is. She's not so unreasonable as to discount seeing someone you thought was dead and being thrown onto an island to be a possible ritual sacrifice on top of everything else.
Her eyes widen at his words, though. It's unexpected for him to say something that's not absolutely infuriating. Her expression softens, and it's the most genuine she's been in front of him in a long while. ]
Tomioka-san.
[ Her voice is gentle. It's because she knows what he's like that she can tell that he is actually trying for once. ]
We Pillars are always ready to put our lives on the line to defeat Muzan. We work to protect everyone we can reach.
I gave up my life so we could defeat Upper Moon Two and Muzan. I can do it again, if we run out of time here. I won't give up on finding another solution until the very end, but when my death is already certain...
[ Her kindness shines through her smile. It's not merciful, but there's no way she wouldn't try to save his life, too, as frustrating as he can be. She knows he's a good person underneath his terrible personality, and that's what matters in the end. ]
[ he said the same to her once, didn't he? how it was important for them as pillars to be the support for everyone—pillars must act as pillars. that fundamental belief has not changed but perhaps his heart has changed. little by little...
still, he's not a person with clear eyes who could make baseless claims of blind optimism, or even make the suggestion that things in the past could be changed. he can't stand with those beliefs—to stand with those would be an insult to those who have protected him. they all gave up their lives for something greater than just themselves.
so, while he notes that the smile on her face is far different than the ones that she normally has around him, he can't exactly find a reply... they're going to be doing their best to find an alternative. they're going to defend those who waver— ]
I don't want to see that happen.
[ she'll already leave to go back to the afterlife once they escape here. ]
[ More and more, she sees the effect that Tanjiro and Nezuko has had on him. He's become softer, more like lake water that can ripple and reflect than a lake whose surface has been frozen in time.
She thinks that's good, for him to care and show kindness in his own awkward way instead of being unyielding like ice. It's a shame she won't live to see how much more he'll change.
It's all right because in the end, they both have the resolution to do their jobs as pillars. She may be leaving people behind, but she, more than anything, wants to protect the happiness of those who deserve it, to save those lives— ]
You may not want to see it, but you should prepare yourself.
[ After all, they're not the ones who should waver. ]
[ he accepted it back in the fortress because there was no other choice but to accept it. there was a goal before them that they needed to focus on and the loses were expected. maybe if giyuu was better at communication and understood the nuances of delicate situations, he might be able to say something along the lines of how it was nice to see her.
how he was shocked (sad) to hear that she died. they weren't necessarily friends, but she was one of the few that he would respond to—when he spoke—and spoke to him. he's not be able to express those kind of feelings, but he will look away to consider what can be said. just for a moment. ]
Even so, I still don't want to see it. We'll have to work our hardest.
[ mitsuri said something similar, right? it seems like something that should be said in a situation like this. ]
[ She smiles. It's odd how she hasn't spent this whole conversation annoyed because of him. She can't say she hates it because she wants—did want—to be able to work with all the other Pillars and get along with them truly and not in the wishful way she does with the memory of her sister vivid in her mind. ]
We will. Perhaps if we all make it out of here, I'll have to concede that there could be more than one person who could like you.
[ They aren't friends, but they may be something closer to it now.
[ amazing what dying and constantly being influenced by tanjiro can do to giyuu... though suppose the mood couldn't last for much longer given how shinobu's comment about having more than one person liking him has his brows furrowing together. there was a whole other part of what she said but he's not missing that jab.
just one person?
i. it just had to be a revised hot take of the statement of how he is disliked people, didn't it? though she didn't say no one this time and that's important except...well. ]
I'm liked by more than just one person.
[ sometimes things really don't change that much. ]
[ Sometimes, things don't change that much, and sometimes, this normalcy is what's needed. To know this is the Giyuu Tomioka she knows and, well, she doesn't adore him, but trusts. She can trust him to get the job done even if it's sometimes in the most frustrating manner.
She knows what to account for. It's almost comforting.
She puts a hand to her mouth. ]
Oh, my. Two people.
[ She will be kind enough to concede that it's two now. Tanjiro and Mitsuri. ]
truly—he doesn't know it, but to slip back into a more familiar pace where there is banter(??) between the two of them could exist is nice. sometimes a break is reminiscent of the times were things were a touch less dire. ]
Two people..?
[ poor giyuu is going to try to think of the people she's counting. is she counting tanjiro in this? or is she just thinking of the other pillars... he was making an effort to get along with sanemi (debatable) before everything went to shit. ]
You don't agree? I'm sorry for misunderstanding. [ What is there to misunderstand about "I'm liked by more than one person"? ] Shall I drop the number back to one?
[ She knows that's not what he means, but he makes it so easy. He has to do better than say something without any reasoning.
He should mention Sanemi, so she can shoot him down. ]
[ he's not really misunderstanding. (no, he totally is.) she's just being herself.
he went from zero to one then to two and now back to one. but clearly there had to be at least a full hand of people should would exist to like him, right? (who he'd imagine those people would be is beyond me but—) ]
...who were the two people you spoke of?
[ what does it say that you can't even comfortably confirm them on your own? ]
[ there might be some slight hesitation in his voice even though it's about the same as putting a dog on the free spot on a bingo card. THE PROBLEM IS THE SECOND ONE. this shouldn't be a mind game but he knows that she'll use it as a way to politely dunk him with whatever name he says.
[ as though shinobu needed more ammo to dunk on him in the first place.... ]
Tanjiro.
[ again, another person who qualifies as "free space", but while he was hesitant about mitsuri, he isn't with tanjiro. he vaguely considers tanjiro's friends and... well, even on the impossibly slim possibility that they could like him, he doesn't know if he wants to be liked by them.
isn't that a crying shame? and in news that will definitely give shinobu a laugh— ]
I was planning on bringing Shinazugawa ohagi the next time I saw him.
[ as an offering to get along with him better but then things went to shit. ]
